More Potential Problems AND Their Solutions
- Dead Battery
Depending on the age and model of your vehicle, your vehicle’s battery life may have to do with the key not releasing from the ignition.
First, check to see if the rest of your vehicle has power. Do the lights work? What about the radio? If these things do not work you can pretty much confirm that you have a dead battery. If this happens you need to have your vehicle evaluated by a mechanic.
- Locked Steering
Almost all vehicles are equipped with an automatic locking system within the steering that is activated when the vehicle is turned off. It serves several functions including safety as well as security from theft.
However, sometimes this locking system can become locked itself which increases pressure on the Ignition Switch. This can cause the key to get stuck in your ignition.
To fix this issue, tightly hold your steering wheel and attempt to carefully move it back and forth. Even though the wheel will be locked, try to move it as much as it will allow. While doing this lightly pull on the key, this should allow the key to loosen and become free.
- An Old Key / Dirty

- To fix this problem, apply a little bit of lubricant such as WD-40 between the key and the lock to help loosen up the dirt and coax your key to come out.
